adrenaline

Last Saturday we went to an amusement park. Rollercoasters, water rides and very expensive junk food was the fare. It was a bit rainy but not painfully so. We didn't have that many long queues to stand in, I think our longest was perhaps 35 minutes.

What amazes me is the adrenaline and fear I felt on going on one of these blockbuster rides, designed to emulate what it might be like to be a race car driver. The highest drop was of 73 meters, and the fastest speed was about 130 km/hour. Yeah. My feet didn't touch the bottom of the carriage, and at many points on going from fast up to fast down, my bottom was no longer touching the seat. I was weightless for a few milliseconds, which was a calming and soothing feeling compared to the rush of going down and speeding around the corners.

Why do we subject ourselves ON PURPOSE to fear and adrenaline? I think it is to help train us in real life when we are in stressful situations. Heck, if you can handle up to 4-5 G and travel a little over a kilometer in less than 90 seconds, you can handle big-wig meetings and other situations with a calm reserve.

Fear is good sometimes!
